Rottan is situated at the mouth of the longest fjord of northern Saor, on the northern face of the Felsenmeer mountains. The city sprawls out onto the ice shelf during the winter months, as temporary structures are rolled out onto the ice to facilitate the collection of an oily substance that is excreted by whales local to the sea. In the winter months, this oil collects below the surface of the ice. This oil is a staple of Baumeni cuisine, and it is also exported to cities with substantial Carragh populations
