The Nahkoen are astral nomads, drifting along the currents of the galactic stream in search of forested planets they can call home for a time, before moving on to new horizons. While on the planet, they mark the trees with a special pheremone which lets other Nahkon known when they were there and their intended direction upon leaving a planet. In this way, they can meet up with other tribes for trade and genetic diversity. The Nahkoen travel in small fleets for safety, and family units within those fleets, which consist of a mother and her cubs. Fathers come from other tribes and are typically not present in the family unit, except when tribes are merged

Nahkoen have an intimidating build, both tall and broad, with equally wide shoulders and abdomen. Their bodies are covered in fur and their facial features are ursine. They have human shaped hands and feet which are covered in fur, though this fur is short on the underside. On each digit, above the nail are sharp, semi-retractable claws. They also have long canines relative to humans. Unlike many other species, the Nahkoen do not have an inverted shin, and their legs are thick and powerful. Despite their large size, they are surprisingly fast

As a species with strong nomadic tendencies, the Nahkoen encounter most of the other species frequently. They prefer to avoid all other species as a general rule, but are polite when interacting with them. Their image is generally positive, though some do object to Nahkoen's presence on a home world. The Nahkoen generally disregard the wishes and feelings of anyone who is not a member of their tribe, which can cause conflict

Nahkoen that leave their tribes willingly are rare. If a tribe becomes too small to travel, it will often merge with another tribe, though occasionally a lone Nahkon will seek a new tribe among other species
